Flat Rock Community High School
MSBOA Band Festival

October 10, 2016

On Monday we hosted the Michigan School Band & Orchestra (MSBOA) festival on Mittlestat Field. The band had a strong showing, finishing with an overall rating of 2 (1 is the best and 5 means you have a lot of work to do…). Mr. Engelbert was pleased to receive a score of 1 on the marching which he says shows how hard this group has worked this year to make their Elvis show a success.

Kite Flying

October 05, 2016

Each year, Mrs. Grywalski schedules time to take advantage of the last days of Fall to take her Applied Math class outside. They plan and construct simple kites that they actually try to have take flight. Some are successful and some not so much... They record their data and then bring it back to the classroom to apply math principles to real life physics. Plus they learn that flying kites actually is fun!

Homecoming Banner Painting

October 04, 2016

After school on Tuesday, representatives of the classes gathered in the cafeteria for the painting of the banners. Each year they are given 3 hours to complete a banner that that will be judged for creativity, use of the class theme, and school spirit. Final results will be unveiled at Friday's Pep Assembly.

Homecoming Pep Rally #1

October 03, 2016

This year we've shortened the Friday afternoon Pep Rally and turned it into 2 times the fun by having a Homecoming Kick-Off Pep Rally on Monday afternoon. All Fall sports teams were recognized, the Marching Band performed, cheerleaders did a routine, the Homecoming Courts were presented and preliminary games (Tug-o-war - winners were senior boys and junior girls).

Holocaust Memorial Center Field Trip

September 30, 2016

On Friday, September 30th, Diane Moyer’s History of Injustice class and Mike Wagner’s History of Michigan class took a field trip to the Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills. Our students spent a remarkable and moving day learning about the Holocaust and the Memorial Center’s mission to honor those who perished and survived the Holocaust, by using the lessons of the Holocaust as a model for teaching ethical conduct and responsible decision-making. They tell the story of individuals who, in the midst of evil, stood for the best rather than the worst of human nature. Our teachers hope to continue bringing groups each year to share in the lessons of the Shoah.

An Apple for Ryan Food Drive

September 30, 2016

This week is the culmination of “An Apple for Ryan” food drive, an annual event to honor the memory of FRCHS student Ryan Sergent. After his tragic health related death during Cross Country practice (October 9, 1997), the next year Ryan’s mother, family, and friends began the food drive to continue Ryan’s passion for helping the less fortunate of our Downriver communities. Classrooms have collected canned food, non-perishable goods, toiletries, and cleaning products in their first hours. At the end of this week the donations will be taken to the Woodhaven Kiwanis for distribution to local food pantries. NHS is sponsoring the activity, please direct any questions to Kerri Mose at kmose@flatrockschools.org
