Flat Rock Community High School
Expect Respect

March 07, 2017

1

FRCHS was proud to once again host the “Expect Respect” Workshop sponsored by the Soroptimist International of the Flat Rock Area, The Guidance Center, Judge Jennifer Coleman Hesson, and attorney Chris Shemke. Our students were well behaved and responded well to the program. It delivered a much needed message for our students on safe and responsible use of social media to promote healthy interpersonal relationships.

CTE New Student Visits

February 16, 2017

11

During the next two weeks, students from FRCHS and other DCTC schools will begin to visit various programs across the nine school. Today, Karen Boonenberg's Pharmacy Technician program welcomed potential first year students for the 17-18 school year. They were treated to a potluck luncheon and tour of the program. They then had an opportunity to interact with the other students in hands on activities as well as round table discussions. It was a wonderful introduction to an amazing CTE program we are all quite proud of here at FRCHS.

The major focus of Key Club International is summarized in their guiding statement "Children: Their Future, Our Focus.” Our chapter has already begun the planning stage of various service efforts within our community.

FRCHS Band Holiday Concert

December 22, 2016

ee

Thursday night was the annual Flat Rock Concert Band Holiday Concert. This marked Mr. Engelbert’s 26th Holiday Concert and he decided to change things from the old standards. Each piece of music that the Band played was brand new to the program, never being played before. I was thrilled to be invited by the students to narrate one of the pieces A Christmas Tale: Fear the Krampus, a scary little tale from European folklore.

Ugly Sweater Day

December 16, 2016

nn

The week before our Holiday Break is always our Holiday Spirit Week this dress up days and activities to get in a festive mood. This year with school going so close to Christmas, we had to have a highly anticipated dress up day the Friday before. That day is National Ugly Sweater Day. Our students and staff definitely enjoy finding just the right fashion accessory for the day that will accentuate the festive mood and bring out their personality.

Pennies for Presents

December 16, 2016

The Pennies for Presents fundraiser was again very successful this year at FRCHS. I am continually amazed at the generosity of our students. Put in a little competition and food into that equation and things get a little intense. After a few hard fought weeks three seventh hour classrooms came out on top; Mrs. Grapentine, Mr. Lhamon & Mrs. Vaughn. Student Council treated them to pizza to thank them for their generosity in helping raise money for local families.bb

Holiday Giving

December 12, 2016

Many of our service based student organizations and sports teams take time during the first few weeks of December to devote to charitable pursuits. The community spirit of compassion and caring that drives these young people to assist those who may be financially struggling during the Holiday Season is admirable. There are numerous endeavors that our students put their efforts behind by themselves, with another community organization, or local business partner. The following is only a small sampling from the last week.

On Tuesday, December 6th, the FRCHS Student Council partnered with the Flat Rock Police Department and our local Meijer store in the annual “Shop with a Hero” event. Children from our community were able to shop alongside an FRPD officer for holiday gifts. Our Student Council members then wrapped the gift at Meijer so that the gifts would be ready to place under their tree at home.

The combined Simpson MS & FRCHS Student Councils raised money since before Thanksgiving through their annual Pennies for Presents fundraiser. That money was pooled with the FRCS Staff Giving Tree and Denim in December fundraisers. Our Student Councils then went on Friday to Target where the students then shopped and picked out items for the families. A total of 75 students were involved under the guidance of Beth Stapleton, Toni Gratz, and Ann Unger. After shopping, the students all returned to FRCHS for an afternoon of leadership activities and team building exercises.

The Flat Rock/Airport Jets Varsity Hockey team adopted a local family through United Angels, an organization that supports the parents and families of children with special needs. The money was donated and raised by players and their families. The team went to Target on Saturday to shop and were able to provide clothes, toys, gifts, and gift cards to ease their burdens during the holidays.

Helping Hands Winter Clothing Drive

November 30, 2016

aa

Each year the FRCHS National Honor Society and the Downriver Career & Technical Consortium Computer Engineering Drafting Program work in conjunction with Helping Hands for a Winter Clothing Drive to help local needy families. Art Survey

November 29, 2016

aa

In visiting classrooms I often see wonderful core academic lessons hitting home important subjects like Chemistry, Calculus and Literature. I also see lessons that I take a great deal of joy in watching students make a mess… like in the Art classroom last week where I witnesses the triumphs and tragedies of Slip Casting. Some turned out fantastic, some not so much… It is always rewarding to watch students dive into something new, take chances, get their hands dirty, and see the product of their labors.
