Everyday Math
Elementary students in Walled Lake use Everyday Mathematics 4 (EM4). The newest edition of Everyday Mathematics, developed at the University of Chicago, provides students with state of the art curriculum and digital resources.
This research-based and field-tested curriculum focuses on developing children’s understandings and skills in ways that produces the foundation for life-long mathematical power.
The Everyday Mathematics curriculum emphasizes:
- Use of concrete, real-life examples that are meaningful and memorable as an introduction to key mathematical concepts.
- Repeated exposures to mathematical concepts and skills to develop children’s ability to recall knowledge from long-term memory.
- Frequent practice of basic computation skills to build mastery of procedures and quick recall of facts, often through games and verbal exercises.
- Use of multiple methods and problem-solving strategies to foster true proficiency and accommodate different learning styles.
Each grade of the Everyday Mathematics curriculum is carefully designed to build and expand a student’s mathematical proficiency and understanding. Our goal: to build powerful mathematical thinkers.*

Supporting Your Student
Parents are an instrumental part of the educational process. Supporting students at home with mathematical understanding can be accomplished in many ways. By selecting the EM4 edition, parents can view grade level unit resources here. Another way parents can support student’s mathematical thinking is through game play. For online grade level games click here. At this time, EM4 games need to be played through Firefox. Be sure to update the following Adobe Shockwave plugin.
