John Barnes Elementary School

Barbara Macneil's Classroom

Math

We use the Everyday Math curriculum.  This curriculum has a journal (student workbook) and a student reference book (SRB).  We will be working out of the journal daily and most of this work will be done together in class.  If your child is absent, they will need to make up these pages.  The SRB is a resource that we will occasionally use together and students are encouraged to use on their own.  They may bring either of these books home but they need to make sure to bring them back especially the journal since we work out of it daily.

Students will be assessed by completion of target problems in their journals along with occassional Target Practice or mathbox reviews.  Students will be given class time to complete most of these assignments.  However, if they do not finish them in the time given, then they need to be taken home to complete.  We will also have a test for each unit.  Students will be given a homework packet for each unit and this should be completed daily as we complete the accompanying lesson in class.  These homework assignments are not graded or used toward their math grade because they are practice that I go over and discuss with the students.  However, the packet should be used as a study guide for the unit assessment and should be turned in the day of the unit assessment signed by a parent.

Throughout the week, we will engage in various math games and activities that stimulate an interest in math and develop the math strategies needed for success.

  • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them - Keep on going!
  • Reason abstractly and quantitatively- Think what makes sense!
  • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others - Talk and explain!
  • Model with mathematics - Show your thinking!
  • Use appropriate tools strategically - Use the right tools!
  • attend to precision - Check your work!
  • Look for and make use of structure - See the pattern or connection!
  • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning - See the pattern or connection!
