Mrs. Kryk welcomes you to the
Simpson Media Center
Meet Marley Dias!
We love to encourage students here at Simpson Middle School to make a difference.
Marley Dias is an excellent example of an 11 year old girl from New Jersey who made a difference in her school and community. We chose to highlight her work in the Media Center as it centers around literacy. Marley was frustrated that she did not see many main characters in young adult literature who were like her, African American females. She decided to start a book drive to obtain and distribute books with African American females as main characters. The result was astounding! Scholastic Books got involved, as did many musicians across the globe.
She collected 4,000 books!!!
Movies and Books - The Perfect Pair
With so many young adult literature books being made into movies in recent years, we have highlighted just a few that we have in our collection. Many times it is fun for students to read the book before or after watching a movie and discussing how they were similar and/or different from one another.
Parents can encourage their children to start book clubs with friends in which they read a book then view the movie together as a group. Reading is always more fun with friends!
