Curriculum
Math: Students in the 5th grade will use the Everyday Math Curriculum as well as Accelerated Math to engage in daily Math lessons. Students will be expected to complete lessons in school as well as at home.
Reading: We use the Literacy by Design curriculum for reading. This includes word study, parts of speech, reading and identifying different genres and guided reading groups. These groups will be designed to give each of my student’s instruction and guidance at the level they need it most.
We will also be participating in the Accelerated Reader program. My students will have individual point goals which they must achieve each semester.
Writing: We will be following Lucy Calkin's Writing Workshop model this year. We will be focusing on four types of writing.
Unit 1: Narrative Writing
Unit 2: Improving our Narrative Writing
Unit 3: Essay Writing
Unit 4: Writing Fiction and Tall Tales
We will also be studying poetry throughout the year.
Spelling: Students receive a new spelling list every week. The spelling lists are from the Literacy by Design curriculum.
The weekly schedule for Spelling is as follows:
- Monday: students receive the new list on a worksheet
- Tuesday: review words
- Wednesday: review words
- Thursday: review words
- Friday: final spelling test and worksheet due
Social Studies: Students will be involved in many projects, activities, and assignments related to the Learning Target for each of the units of study.
We do not use a textbook for Social Studies. We follow the curriculum set by the State of Michigan. Students will receive all of the lessons and be required to keep them in the folder
Science: We will be following the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), there are three distinct and equally important dimensions to learning science. These dimensions are combined to form each standard—or performance expectation—and each dimension works with the other two to help students build a cohesive understanding of science over time.
